David joined the league for his very first game of Dead Man’s Hand. With every new player starting with 10 poker chips, this showdown also served as a proper introduction to the game.

David brought four Lawmen, while Sil rode into town with four Outlaws, both gangs carrying a total Reputation of 15.

Six mysterious loot boxes were scattered around town, and from the very first turn it was clear that opening them could bring fortune… or a whole lot of trouble.

Some boxes contained nothing but dust and disappointment. Then Sil struck gold: the jackpot — 10 poker chips! Suddenly, one of his Outlaws was sprinting across town with a small fortune in his pockets, desperately trying to stay alive long enough to keep it.

Meanwhile, two other loot boxes turned out to contain burning sticks of dynamite.

BOOM!

Two buildings were blown apart, plenty of damage was dealt, and there was a lot of laughing around the table. Just another peaceful afternoon in the Wild West.

David’s Gunslinger had better luck, finding several packs of cigarettes. These can be used during a shooting roll to gain extra dice modifiers. He then climbed onto a horse and set off at full speed after Sil’s jackpot-carrying outlaw.

The chase was on.

With hooves pounding through town, David’s Gunslinger caught up, opened fire and shot the outlaw down. Better yet, he rode away with all 10 stolen poker chips.

That’s the West for you: finders keepers… until somebody with a six-shooter finds you.

The game itself ended in a draw, so both players recovered half of their original pot. But both gangs had done plenty of looting along the way.

Before spending their winnings, Sil had built his haul up to 60 poker chips, while rookie David reached a respectable 23. Sil also discovered a duel gun inside one of the loot boxes.

Then it was time to invest those hard-earned dollars back into town. David bought a Horse Stable, while Sil bought both a Horse Stable and a Saloon.

These buildings will generate extra poker chips after future games, giving the gangs more money to gamble during games, buy new buildings and slowly expand their Wild West empires.

Final score: Sil 15 chips, David 2 chips — and the town is two buildings shorter.

Not bad for a first game.

Until next time, keep your six-shooter loaded, your horse nearby… and never trust a loot box that’s ticking.
